Ian Mackenzie is a Canadian author and linguist whose life has been dedicated to studying a unique and exceptional culture: the nomadic Penan’s, the last of their kind. They live close to the Equator, so they know no seasons. They do not have mirrors, so would not be capable of recognizing themselves in a photo; they know not their own age; they live, everyday, happily. Mackenzie has learned their language and he is in the midst of putting together the only Penan dictionary ever published, in order to have a written testament of this thousand–year-old culture. We follow him in the jungles of Sarawak, where he teaches us how these fascinating “last nomads” live, eat, hunt, and survive. The rainforest, their sole livelihood, is threatened by logging companies and these men, women and children might be forced to settle. The culture is fading, day-by-day and Mackenzie witnesses this with sadness and regret. The relationship he’s built over the years with these remarkable people is inspirational.
